Brain Power Development Centre To Observe International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
The United Nations’ International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, falls on June 26th every year to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represents to our societies.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime [UNODC], nearly 200 million people are using illicit drugs such as cocaine, cannabis, opiates and other substances worldwide, and this resolution recommended further actions with regards to the report and conclusion of the international conference on drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
With this, the UN members have expressed commitment in fighting the problem, and in commemorating this year’s day, on the theme ‘Make health your new high in life not drugs’ Brain Power Development Center, a non- governmental organisation in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality is embarking on ONE- ON- ONE individual education exercise to commemorate the day, in helping fight against drug abuses and illicit trafficking within Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea Huni-Valley District.
Place targeted for today’s excises includes, Tarkwa na Aboso, Bankyim, Akyempim, UMaT, Kawir Kwan Ano, among other communities.
The group is also aimed on it responsibilities, in educating the public, on the fight against the use of drugs and illicit trafficking, with its target in all the senior high schools within both Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea Huni-Valley District.
Reports available from a thorough research has indicated that, 200 people die every year from drug related illnesses and 25 million people are also said to be drug dependent world-wide.
The leader and founder of Brain Power Development Centre, Mr. Reik Willinson Annan, is therefore calling on governments, opinion leaders, to do everything possible to raise awareness of the harm caused by illicit drugs and to also help in discouraging individual profiting from their uses.
